CALGARY, AB
– The Calgary Olympic Oval is set for a pair of major competitions this weekend.  The Fastest Ice in the World will play host to the Oval’s annual CAN-AM Speed Skating International as well as the ISU Junior World Cup Regional.

The CAN-AM is a four day, single distance long track skating competition that will welcome over 180 skaters of all ages - primarily from across Canada, the United States and Asia.  Any member of the International Skating Union may compete in the Can-Am Competition, provided that the member is properly registered with the Organizing Committee and approved by their member country.   The competition will include Ladies and Men’s 500M, 1000M, 1500M, 3000M and Mass Start races as well as a 5000M Men’s race.   Many of the Canadian participants will be vying for spots on their respective provincial teams for the upcoming 2015 Canada Winter Games in Prince George (February 13-20, 2015) with several provincial bodies using this competition as their Canada Games qualifiers.

The ISU Junior World Cup Regional is a two day competition which will feature just over 30 world class juniors (under-19). This will be the highest level of competition for these junior skaters outside of this season’s World Junior Championship to be held in Poland (February 19-21, 2015).  One of the skaters to watch will be Canadian Isabelle Weidemann who qualified for this season’s Canadian Fall World Cup team but chose to remain in Calgary to catch up on her training following an injury shortened off-season.  Weidemann is a 19-year old up and coming junior allround skater who was selected for the national team training squad this season.  A native of Ottawa, ON she is coached by Oval Program coach Crispin Parkinson and is the two-time reigning Canadian Junior Female Allround Champion (2013 & 2014).  Thus far in 2014-15 she has posted personal bests in her first two major competitions (Oval Fall Classic & World Cup Trials).
