Olympic Oval Set to Welcome 24th Allround Masters Games!

CALGARY, AB – The 24th Masters Allround Games are set to kick off this weekend at the Calgary Olympic Oval.  Over 150 competitors will descend on Calgary for the world`s highest level of Men`s & Ladies speed skating for athletes over the age of 30.  

"On behalf of the Olympic Oval, we are very proud to welcome everyone to the 24th Masters Allround Games." said Oval Director Yves Hamelin "We have a simple set of key values - among them: Passion, Enjoyment and Dedication.  Masters athletes are the personification of these values and they continue to demonstrate a belief in the practice of sport and wellness for life."

Including Canada, 14 countries will be represented in this three day competition which will include competitors in the 500M, 1000M, 1500M, 3000M and 5000M distances.  Athletes will be divided into age groups based on five year increments from 30 to 35 years old and so on. (ie.30 to 34, 35 to 39, etc.)

Five athletes over the age of 75 are expected to skate including Calgary`s own Roy Whitney who will be the oldest athlete participating at the amazing age of 87.

“It’s stimulating to the system and it`s really about the people you associate with - the other skaters…  That plus the facilities here and the coaching – [The Oval] is just a tremendous place for the sport of speed skating.” said Whitney adding with a laugh “I am just hoping I can survive these races!”

The 24th Masters Allround Games run all weekend (February 6th to 8th) at the Olympic Oval.  Admission is complimentary - drop by and take in this one of a kind event!
