24th Masters Allround Games Open with Record Breaking Day

CALGARY, AB – The 24th Masters Allround Games got off to a record breaking start today at the Calgary Olympic Oval.  Day one saw seven International Masters Speed Skating Committee IMSSC records fall.  For the third time Pentti Kiiskinen of Finland was able to break his own world record time in the 500M 70-74 year old age category.

“On behalf of the Calgary Oval we are very proud to congratulate all of our new world record holders!” said Oval Director Yves Hamelin “This is a great accomplishment not just for our competitors but also for our ice technicians who take great pride in producing “The Fastest Ice in The World””

Day one saw several inspired performances including Canadian Kevin Frost, a mostly deaf and partially blind competitor in the 45-49 year old division and Michael Hubbs, an American skater in the 30-34 year old division who is also deaf. 

87 year old Roy Whitney, the competition’s oldest participant and Calgary native posted a time of 1:33.92 to take the 85-89 year old division in the Mens 500M.

Over 150 competitors are competing in the world`s highest level of Men`s & Ladies speed skating for athletes over the age of 30.  Including Canada, 14 countries are represented in this three day competition which includes competitors in the 500M, 1000M, 1500M, 3000M and 5000M distances as well as a Mass Start.   

Competition continues tomorrow with the first races scheduled for 9:00 AM at the Oval.  Saturday’s events include the Mens and Womens 1500M and 1000M races in all age categories.
