– The University of Calgary Olympic Oval is set to host it’s first major long track competition of the season this weekend.  The Olympic Oval’s 2015 Fall Classic will welcome nearly 200 skaters from a variety of countries including China, Korea, Japan, Norway, Finland, Switzerland, India, the U.S.A and of course Canada.  This single distance event will include men’s and women’s races in the 500M, 1000M, 1500M, 3000M and 5000M distances as well as the always exciting men’s and women’s Mass Start races.

Most of Canada’s elite pool skaters will be in competition this weekend including the “Queen of the Mass Start” Ivanie Blondin.  Blondin was crowned the 2014-15 World Cup Champion in the Mass Start and took home the silver medal in the Mass Start event at the World Single Distance Championships last season.  The native of Ottawa, ON represented Canada at the 2014 Olympic games in Sochi and for her efforts last season was named the Long Track Athlete of the Year by Speed Skating Canada.  The Mass Start races will cap what should be an exciting weekend of races on Sunday afternoon.

The list of other skaters to watch this weekend includes a pair of South Korean sprinters – Mo Tae-Bum; the 2010 Olympic Champion and two-time World Single Distance Champion (2012, 2013) in the 500M and Sang Hwa Lee the 2010 & 2014 Olympic Champion and two-time World Single Distance Champion (2012, 2013) in the 500M.

The U of C Olympic Oval is very excited to announce that a live webcast will be available for the 2015 Fall Classic.  The event will be webcast live on the Olympic Oval’s YouTube channel at:  This will mark one of the four events the Oval will attempt to webcast this season; the others being the Intercontinental Short Track Jr. Invitational (October 9-11), the Canadian Single Distance Championships (January 2-5) and Oval Finale (March 17-20).
