Short Track Training Groups

Group Selections
The Olympic Oval Short Track Program is comprised of two training groups. Groups are determined on both quantitative and qualitative measures. The goal of the Olympic Oval Short Track Program is to develop skaters onto Junior and Senior National Team members.

Group 1 High Performance
This group is comprised of top Senior and Junior skaters from across Canada and around the world. It is lead by National Team coach Jonathon Cavar, and assisted by Maggie Qi and our Oval coaching team. Goals in this group are very specific, and directed to develop skaters for Junior and Senior National teams. Based on these goals, skaters are prepped to qualify for National Team Selections and be contenders for Senior National teams, Junior teams, and Olympic teams. Statistically, data is used to evaluate a skater’s ability using speed, ranking, and ancillary capacities to achieve the goals mentioned above. Based on statistical data of conversion rate of Junior skaters to Senior teams, Junior skaters who possess the speed, skills, and training background to train with Group 1 Seniors will be given priority to enter this group. Group size for this group is 10-15 skaters and depends on applicant’s speed and ranking. A very high level of commitment is required to be considered for this training group, and is a decision that is made in partnership with Speed Skating Canada. International skaters are admitted to the program based on world ranking and personal best times.

Training consists of two to four sessions per day, including two on-ice sessions and dryland training. The coach dictates the number of on and off-ice training sessions to meet both the group and individual skater's goals.

Skaters in this group are high-performance skaters expected to commit to a May-March (11 month) training season, which consists of two to three sessions a day.
