Samsung ISU World Cup Short Track #1 Oct. 19-21, 2012 Olympic Oval Calgary

The Olympic Oval at the University of Calgary celebrated its 25th anniversary by hosting the first ISU World Cup Short Track competition of the 2012/13 season.  This exciting event was hosted in conjunction with Speed Skating Canada and the Alberta Amateur Speed Skating Association.

Short track speed skating made its Olympic debut as a demonstration event at the 1988 Calgary Winter Olympic Games. Full medal status was awarded to the sport in 1992 at the Albertville Winter Olympics.

  • An outstanding spectator sport, fans love the speed, strategy and the spills!
  • Canada has won 25 Olympic medals in short track speed skating, second only to South Korea.
  • Over 200 athletes from 29 different countries participated in the event! 
  • Schools enjoyed the first ever School of Speed Day on Friday, Oct. 19. A rousing success!
