Intercontinental Short Track Invitational Set for This Weekend

Inaugural Event to Welcome 22 International Skaters to the Fastest Ice in The World
CALGARY, AB – The University of Calgary Olympic Oval is set to host the first ever Intercontinental Short Track Invitational this weekend.  This competition has a total of 39 skaters (21 Men, 18 Women) with 22 athletes hailing from Russia, Belgium, Poland, Norway and Great Britain.  This event will also feature several of the Olympic Oval trained Canadian junior and national B team skaters.  


The Calgary group of skaters competing will be led by National development team members Jamie MacDonald, Keri Morrison and Courtney Shmyr.  MacDonald was recently selected for the Canadian Fall World Cup team and will represent Canada at the upcoming Short Track World Cup events in Montreal and Toronto.  The native of Fort St. James, B.C. will be making her World Cup debut after qualifying with an impressive showing at the 2015 Fall World Cup Short Track Selections held September 18-20 in Montreal.  Last season, MacDonald had a breakout year highlighted by a first place finish in the overall standings of Speed Skating Canada’s National Short Track Senior National Team Open Selection #2 in Calgary.

Also among the Canadian athletes competing are five athletes from Quebec – Antoine Roy, Alphonse Ouimette, Arye Richards, Lydiane Cournoyer and Camille DeSerres Rainville. Races will kick off on Friday afternoon with the 1500m at 12:20PM and the 500m event at 2:21PM.  Be sure to check the Oval website or the Oval social media channels for full weekend schedule updates.

In case you can’t make it to the rink – the U of C Olympic Oval is also very excited to announce that a live webcast will be available for the Intercontinental Short Track Jr. Invitational.  The event will be webcast live on the Olympic Oval’s YouTube channel at:  It will mark the second of four events the Oval will attempt to webcast this season; the remaining two being the Canadian Single Distance Championships (January 2-5) and Oval Finale (March 17-20).
