Short track competition will welcome 89 athletes; Three race circuit will include stop in Richmond
CALGARY, AB – The University of Calgary Olympic Oval is set to host the kick off to the Western Elite Series this weekend with Oktoberfest! The Western Elite Circuit (WEC) includes three events and two venues – WEC #1 (Oktoberfest) at the Calgary Oval (October 16-18th) and WEC #2 at the Richmond Oval (December 4-6th). The circuit will then return to Calgary to wrap up with the final event WEC #3 (Winterfest) on February 18-21st. At the end of the competitions the rankings will be split into two separate age categories – U-17 and Open (Junior C and up **Born before July 1st, 2002). This event will feature several of the Olympic Oval trained Canadian junior and national B team skaters as well as a large contingent of provincial level skaters. The 89 skater field includes 2 Internationals and __ Canadians (Listed by province): Alberta - 42; BC – 16; Ontario – 10; Manitoba – 7; Saskatchewan – 6; Yukon & NWT – 5; Quebec – 1.
The WEC has the primary goal of providing quality racing opportunities for the developing Junior and Neo-Senior athletes. Some of the headliners for this weekend include: Canadian National Development team members Keri Morrison and Courtney Shmyr; Jacob McKenzie, the winner of last week`s Intercontinental Short Track Invitational and Keegan Christ who joined him on the podium with a third place finish.
