The Classic Series utilizes a point system to award the winners of each event. Awards will also be presented to the top 3 overall athletes from their best combined Olympic Oval Classic Series Points from the 4 competitions. A leaderboard of each category and distance will be updated throughout the season.

All four competitions will follow the same schedule (with the exception of Summer Classic which omits the Friday schedule)

Friday – W/M 500m(1) – W/M 1000m(1)

Saturday – W/M 500m(2) – W/M 1500m

Sunday – W/M 1000m(2) – W/M14-15 3000m / M 5000m

The Olympic Oval Classic Series will consist of four age categories based on levels of development in the SSC Pathway.

  3. Junior 16-18
  4. Neo Junior 14-15

Individual Competition Awards

Awards will be presented to the winner of each gender age category in each distance at each competition, with the exception of the 500m and 1000m distances, which will be awarded based on combined Olympic Oval Classic Series Points after skating 2x500m and 2x1000m.

Overall awards will be presented based on the total combined Olympic Oval Classic Series Points from the following.

Best 5 of 7 500m points (M/W) 1st 2nd 3rd

Best 5 of 7 1000m points (M/W) 1st 2nd 3rd

Best 3 of 4 1500m points (M/W) 1st 2nd 3rd

Best 3 of 4 3000m points (W) 1st 2nd 3rd

Best 3 of 4 5000m (Junior 14-15 3000m) points (M) 1st 2nd 3rd 


***Overall Olympic Oval Classic Series Points tie breakers go to the fastest time skated in the distance in question from an Olympic Oval Classic Series event this season.

Age Eligibility
Any bonafide member of the International Skating Union that is ISU age category C2 and older (born before July 1, 2010) may compete in the CanAm International Competition, provided that the member is properly registered with their Provincial Association or Member Country.

Time Standards
No time standards for the 500m, 1000m, and 1500m.
Women 3000m – 5:05.00 or 1500m 2:22.00
Junior 14-15 3000m – 4:45.00 or 1500m 2:12.00
Men 5000m – 7:45.00 or 1500m 2:12.00

Entries for the Summer Classic/Fall Classic/Oktoberfest Classic/Winter Classic must be submitted electronically.

Entry Fees
The entry fee is $21.50 CDN per race (includes GST)
Late Fee: Double entry fee after the registration cutoff date.

Registration and Refund Policy

Olympic Oval Waiver Form
Skaters in their first competition of the season in the Olympic Oval must fill out the Waiver Form (Speed Skating Training and Competitions).

General Regulations
The Summer Classic/Fall Classic/Oktoberfest Classic/Winter Classic Speed Skating competition will be held in accordance with the 2024 International Skating Union Regulations and updates and is open to all skaters who belong to an ISU member country.  It is listed on the International Skating Union Calendar and sanctioned by Speed Skating Canada and Alberta Speed Skating.

The Track
The Olympic Oval is a standard speed skating track of 400 meters to the lap.  The refrigerated ice track has a 5 meter wide warmup lane.  The radii of the inner and outer competition lanes are 26 and 30 meters respectively.  The width of the racing track is 4 meters.

Citizenship/Residence requirements and Clearance Procedure
In accordance with Rule 109 of the ISU Regulations and ISU Communication No. 2526, all skaters who do not have the nationality of the Member by which they have been entered or who, although having such nationality, have in the past represented another Member, must produce an ISU Clearance Certificate.

Composition and the Starting Order of Pairs
The draw is conducted under the current SSC rules and ISU rules where applicable. The Pairings for Day One will be available by 3:00pm MT on the day prior to day one of racing.

Liability
In accordance with ISU Rule 119; the International Skating Union, Speed Skating Canada, Speed Skating Alberta, the Olympic Oval, and the University of Calgary assume no responsibility for, or liability with respect to bodily or personal injury or loss of property or damage incurred in connection with the 2024 CanAm International Speed Skating Competition. Each Skater is solely responsible for providing insurance coverage thereto.

Transportation
Each skater is responsible for their own transportation.

All Skaters will be charged for their ice training prior to the competition with the exception of the day prior to the competition where training is free of charge. The Olympic Oval

The Oval is an important and integral part of the Faculty of Kinesiology.
