General Regulations

The Masters' International Sprint Games 2023 will be held in accordance with the following conditions of contest and the Regulations of the International Masters Speed Skating Committee (IMSSC) and the International Skating Union (ISU) at the covered 400 m standard speed skating track of the Olympic Oval, 2500 University Drive N.W., Calgary/Canada, on artificial ice. This competition is a regular event on the International ISU Masters’ calendar.

The Track

The Olympic Oval is a standard speed skating track of 400 meters to the lap.  The refrigerated ice track has a 5 meter wide warmup lane.  The radii of the inner and outer competition lanes are 26 and 30 meters respectively.  The width of the racing track is 4 meters.

Citizenship/Residence requirements and Clearance Procedure

In accordance with Rule 109 of the ISU Regulations and ISU Communication No. 2030, all skaters who do not have the nationality of the Member by which they have been entered or who, although having such nationality, have in the past represented another Member, must produce an ISU Clearance Certificate.

Limitation/Restriction of Participants

The competition is limited to 150 competitors and generally, entries are accepted in chronological order. There are no quotas per country.

For countries that apply selection criteria, the IMSSC country representative is responsible that the participants of his/her/their country are selected according to these criteria. It is the participants responsibility to register electronically on the Olympic Oval website for the event if they have met their Federations' selection criteria.

Composition and the Starting Order of Pairs

Each of the five-year age groups is considered a separate competition in this respect.

If there are more than 100 participants at Masters’ International Sprint Games 2023, the participants shall be divided into two or more blocks of 5-year age groups. The first block completes their two distances before the next block, and so on. This will reduce the waiting time between the two distances.

To be able to recognize the intermediate standings within the original five-year age groups even when they are joined, the name of the competitors should be accompanied by their age group in all start lists and results, for instance:  Otto Meier M55.

Drawing at the Masters’ International Sprint Games 2023 will be done according to ISU Rule 240 paragraph 4, with three exceptions:

  • On all the distances all five-year age will be drawn together for drawing (Ladies and Men separately).
  • Drawing and allotting of track of the third and fourth distances will be done based on the overall ranking (independent of age group). However, classification and final ranking must be done in separate five-year age groups.
  • All competitors will be admitted to the last distance.

Seeding

On the first two distances of the Masters’ International Sprint Games 2023 the skaters will be seeded in groups of 6  skaters for the draw, according to their best time of the season, their best time of the last season or their estimated times as specified in the announcement.

Liability

In accordance with ISU Rule 119; the International Skating Union, IMSSC, Speed Skating Canada, Speed Skating Alberta, the Olympic Oval, and the University of Calgary assume no responsibility for, or liability with respect to bodily or personal injury or loss of property or damage incurred in connection with the Masters' International Sprint Games 2023 Speed Skating Competition. Each Skater is solely responsible for providing insurance coverage thereto.

Doping Control

Any anti-doping tests will be carried out in accordance with the valid ISU Anti-Doping Rules and ISU Anti-Doping Procedures (ISU Communication No. 2344 or any further update to these Communications).

Transportation

Each skater is responsible for his/her own transportation.

Entries for the Masters' International Sprint Games 2023 must be submitted electronically. Entries are accepted in chronological order, however athletes whose countries apply selection criteria will need to make their individual entries after their qualification process has concluded.

To be eligible the skater must be a member of a National Speed Skating Federation recognized by the ISU and must have a license of his/her/their federation.
