Nagano Classic Series

The Classic Series consists of four age categories based on levels of development in the Speed Skating Canada Pathway.

1. Senior 23+
2. Neo Senior
3. Junior 16-18
4. Neo Junior 14-15

Individual Competition Awards

Awards will be presented to the winner of each gender age category in each distance at each competition, with the exception of the 500m and 1000m distances, which will be awarded based on combined points after skating 2x500m and 2x1000m, in the competitions where these distances are offered twice.

* Tie breakers will go to the skater with the fastest 500m or 1000m time skated in the event.

Nagano Classic Series Overall Awards

The Overall Classification will include up to a maximum of 15 results for each skater, irrespective of the individual distance skated. The winners will be the 1st place skater from each age category.

Tie Breaker
In case of a Tie in the Overall Classification, the Winner will be the Skater with the most 1st place finishes.  In case a Tie persists, the winner will be the Skater with the most 2nd place finishes, then the most 3rd places. If Skaters are tied because they have exactly the same results for their 22 counting results, no further tie will be broken, and they will both be declared Season Champions.

The Olympic Oval Classic Series Points will be awarded as per the chart below.

Age Eligibility
Any bonafide member of the International Skating Union that is ISU age category C2 and older (born before July 1, 2012) may compete in the Classic Series Competitions, provided that the member is properly registered with their Provincial Association or Member Country.

Time Standards
No time standards for the 500m / 1000m / 1500m.
Women 3000m – 5:05.00 or 1500m 2:22.00
Women 5000m – 8:05.00 or 1500m 2:22.00
Men 3000m – 4:45.00 or 1500m 2:12.00
Men 5000m – 7:45.00 or 1500m 2:12.00

*Submitted times must be achieved between July 1, 2024 and registration close date. Times skated in practice will not be accepted. Times are verified through Speed Skating Results website.

Entries for the Nagano Classic Series must be submitted electronically.

Entry Fees
The entry fee is $25 CDN per race (includes GST)
Late Fee: Double entry fee after the registration cutoff date.
*Note: An entry cannot be guaranteed if entered after the Deadline.

Registration and Refund Policy

Olympic Oval Waiver Form
Skaters in their first competition of the season in the Olympic Oval must fill out the Waiver Form (Speed Skating Training and Competitions).

General Regulations
The Nagano Classic Series Competitions will be held in accordance with the 2026 International Skating Union Regulations and updates and is open to all skaters who belong to an ISU member country.  It is listed on the International Skating Union Calendar and sanctioned by Speed Skating Canada and Alberta Speed Skating.

The Track
The Olympic Oval is a standard speed skating track of 400 meters to the lap.  The refrigerated ice track has a 5 meter wide warmup lane.  The radii of the inner and outer competition lanes are 26 and 30 meters respectively.  The width of the racing track is 4 meters.

Citizenship/Residence requirements and Clearance Procedure
In accordance with Rule 109 of the ISU Regulations and ISU Communication No. 2526, all skaters who do not have the nationality of the Member by which they have been entered or who, although having such nationality, have in the past represented another Member, must produce an ISU Clearance Certificate.

Composition and the Starting Order of Pairs
The draw is conducted under the current SSC rules and ISU rules where applicable. The Pairings for Day One will be available by 3:00pm MT on the day prior to day one of racing.

Liability
In accordance with ISU Rule 119; the International Skating Union, Speed Skating Canada, Speed Skating Alberta, the Olympic Oval, and the University of Calgary assume no responsibility for, or liability with respect to bodily or personal injury or loss of property or damage incurred in connection with the 2026-2027 Nagano Classic Series Speed Skating Competitions. Each Skater is solely responsible for providing insurance coverage thereto.

Transportation
Each skater is responsible for their own transportation.

All Skaters will be charged for their ice training prior to the competition with the exception of the day prior to the competition where training is free of charge.
