That’s a wrap! Thank you for your ongoing support of the Olympic Oval at the University of Calgary and our community. After a disappointing year of closure in 2020/21, we are happy to report a return to successful partnership in 2021/22. Despite COVID closures and ongoing restrictions, the Oval was still able to deliver on a number of our agreed collaborations.

Monday Night Toonie Skates

Ever popular, Servus Toonie Monday skates saw 3,165 community members visit the Olympic Oval. While a prolonged COVID closure in January, caused cancellation of four Monday skates, our season extension allowed inclusion of March 28. In total, 19 Servus Toonie Monday skates were completed in 2021/22 compared to 21 in 2019/20. Overall, the 2021 season achieved 65% of the 2019 numbers, however exceeded all years prior. The busiest skate was on December 20, 2021 with 339 skaters.

Member Discount

The member discount continues to be underutilized although we did see a slight increase in numbers over previous years. With continued partnership, we should explore how this can be better leveraged as a value piece for Servus Credit Union members.

Hosting Opportunity at ISU Four Continents Speed Skating Event

In December, the Olympic Oval had the privilege of hosting the International Skating Union World Cup and the Four Continents Speed Skating Championship. Both these events were closed to the public with no external tickets available. Speed Skating Canada graciously allowed us to extend Servus Credit Union ten VIP passes to this closed event.

Family Day Skate

Due to ongoing COVID concerns, the Olympic Oval and Servus Credit Union mutually agreed that we would postpose the 2022 Servus Credit Union Free Family Day Skate until later in the year. A local news outlet erroneously advertised that this event was going ahead, just a few days prior. Fortunately the Oval was able to pivot and ensure that Calgarians were not disappointed. Though the event was not what we had planned, at least 1750 people attended the Family Day Skate. The Servus Family Skate will now take place on October 30, 2022.

Financial Fitness Seminar

Though this has not taken place yet, it is on the calendar with our Olympic Oval Elite Athlete Pathway Program team as part of their “Ice-Out” or off-season training between now and September.

Marketing

The Oval’s partnership with Servus Credit Union is displayed throughout our facility and in online Olympic Oval media. The following activation elements were executed this year: signage at the front desk and skate shop promoting Servus Credit Union member discounts; Servus Credit Union logo on on pillar at the Olympic Oval entrance; Servus Credit Union logo on one Zamboni used during public skates, programs and competitions; Servus Credit Union logo displayed on the Olympic Oval Jumbotron daily during public and program ice bookings; weekly social media marketing on the @theolympicoval Facebook, Twitter and Instagram accounts, tagging @servusalberta

The Olympic Oval views our corporate relationships as more than just sponsorships. We view them as long-lasting community relationships. Our goal is to help Servus associate themselves with more than just a building, but ultimately an experience of health, vitality and fitness.
